CHILD OF THE BRUME Embrace Where You Hail From BACKGROUNDBefore A Realm Reborn: Mira was born in Ishgard in the lowest section known as the Brume, also the poorest area. Her mother Emma was a maid and her father was a botanist. When she was a baby, her father was killed as he was on a job by a group of cloudkin (flying monsters), leaving her mom to care for the newborn on her own. Now she was definitely a working mother; doing her job while keeping an eye on baby Mira until she was old enough to start attending school in Foundation. However, the education was not as high quality as those living in the Pillars received, only having one teacher for over forty children as well as only having one room and very little tomes to learn from. But it was here that Mira’s world began to expand. Even with as many children at the school, Mira was rather quiet and kept to herself. She had no siblings or any relatives therefore, it was hard for her to socialize. There were moments when she wanted to try and play with the boys but because she was a girl, they didn’t believe she could make a good knight, even if it was pretend. And the girls thought her strange because she was bored with their own games. So she found herself staying inside the classroom and reading over the books within. Not much reading material but it kept her occupied. It was her teacher who caught her reading one cold afternoon and came to her the next day with a small book of Ishgardian tales. She had to force some of the children to read the tales most of the time and here was this girl who liked it for the most part. Most stories in that faerie tale book was of knights saving the land from an evil dragon but one of them had the gallant knight face off against a ‘dark knight’. It was the first time Mira had heard of such a figure and when she asked her teacher, she was immediately hushed and told not to speak of it. This didn’t help someone who was nine years old and curiosity got the best of her; it was when her mother asked her to deliver a small parcel to the barkeep on the lower level of the Forgotten Knight that she heard a couple of men speak into their cups about knights who abandon the shield and take on a large sword with two hands. That they do not listen nor follow the highborn, choosing to help their fellow man instead. No greater glory nor any kind of higher status to Halone, just people wishing to make a difference. And it was this that stuck with Mira: someday, she will become a dark knight and help her home be good. Next time she tried to play with the boys during their free time at lessons and they tried to belittle her about not being the right gender for knighthood, Mira instead picked up a stick twice her size and declared that if she could not be as they wish, then she would become a dark knight instead. And proceeded to bonk them all with said stick. Sure, she got into trouble and the adults had to tell her not to talk about the mysterious men who do not use shields, her thoughts on them never ceased. This was for most of Mira’s life until she was sixteen years old, old enough to work and help support her and her mother. And because she learned all she could from the school, her mother knew that her daughter wanted to do good by her and she agreed to speak with her employers and give her a position. However, while Mira did her work just fine, she always found herself being bored and slacking. It wasn’t until her former teacher came to her and told her of a bookbinder in Foundation named Ashaut who is looking for an assistant to help him out. Naturally the work will get her paid and Mira immediately took the position. Her boss was impressed with how diligent she was during her training and the care she put into the books, treating them as if they were precious treasures. Mira was caught often reading the tomes and her boss always asked why. To their surprise, she replied that she always felt like she learned more by reading them. That they make her happy. Her boss was not used to hearing such words with most of the population placing their faith in Halone and her words. However, as the months went by, the books became more of the same and the bookbinder noticed that his assistant while helpful, seemed to be missing something. One day as they were closing up for the night, Ashaut asked Mira a question that would change the woman’s perspective: “What do you seek in life?” Right away, Mira answered that she wanted to make sure her mother had a secure life but he didn’t believe her because she did not answer for herself. Mira was unable to answer until the Calamity hit and the land around them turned into a never ending winter. Despite Mira saving up so she and her mother can get a better place to live within Foundation, her mother decided against it. She had spoken with Ashaut and learned of the question he asked her “What do you seek in life?” and answered with that she does not want her daughter to simply die in Ishgard and waste everything away that she’s learned and what she is willing to. It was Emma and Ashaut who suggested that Mira try becoming an adventurer to figure out what she wants from her life. The problem was that Mira could not think of any skills in her possession that would be useful for adventuring. Cue Ashaut pulling out an old weathered grimoire for beginners and gifting it to her. His reasoning was because she loved books and took in select knowledge rather quickly, maybe this would be a good starting point. Now Gridania would have been an ideal starting place considering how close it was to Ishgard but Mira decided to go further...to the seas of La Noscea and to the city-state of Limsa Lominsa where she would begin the adventure of a lifetime as a fledgling arcanist. PERSONALITYYou know those people who are usually pretty quiet with a nose stuck in a book? That's Mira on first glance. She can be seen as a quiet person who only focuses on the pages in front of her and ignore the world around her. That is until someone decides to do something that can either tear the book from her hands or some idiot decides to pick on some defenseless person, assuming that it's better for them. Usually it's the second one and it ends up with the guy getting her boot up their butt. Mira is someone who doesn't like it when others get bullied for no apparent reason or for some shitty reason such as status, following the ideal of the dark knight, which is to protect the weak from those who would oppress them. She holds the ideals of courage and compassion for her fellow man to be desirable traits for herself and tries to be the best person she can be. She also adores learning new things and is willing to try them out at least once to see if it's something worth pursuing. However, Mira knows she's far from perfect and she even has her own vices such as getting bored too easily and can be blunt when it's not needed or feel petty when she feels like she's been wronged on occasion. What drives her to be a dark knight is compassion for her fellow downtrodden man and the need to protect others. Having grown up in the Brume, she's no stranger to the highborns looking down on those who live there and see nothing but vermin. She's used to the knights doing nothing to aid those less fortunate and focus more on the nobility and those considered better. It's why she is so drawn to the Job of Dark Knight: they are considered the true heroes who protect the weak (prior to Heavensward, thank you Aymeric for being such a good boy) but do not follow the set rules of society because why should they? But Mira has also shown these traits throughout her journey as an adventurer and as the Warrior of Light and Darkness: she's stood up for a poor woman in Ul'dah when a greedy merchant was trying to get her to work for him after accusing her of stealing, she's defended a young woman from the Brume after she told off some corrupt Temple Knights, and even saved people from being tempered by the primal Ifrit on a few occasions. She cares about people and despite Fray (her inner struggle and technically another side to her, feel free to insert your Persona jokes here) protesting and ranting when she doesn't get the proper thanks, she still goes off to help no matter what. It's not like she can simply ignore a cry in need, that's not in her ideals. That's not what a dark knight does. Courage also goes in hand with compassion; you need to care about what you do and despite times where Mira wants to throw her hands up at how Done she can be at the state of the world, she does what she does because she cares about people. Where she grew up, most didn't really have dreams and ambitions, knowing that they would simply wither away and die in the end. If she didn't have compassion, she wouldn't have wanted to get to know people such as letting Minfilia of the First (later called Ryne) come with her for patrols or even give her comfort when Thancred was being a dumb idiot when she was worried about not being 'his' Minfilia. She wouldn't have wanted to help protect Rielle from her Halone-crazed mother trying to kill her(Dark Knight 50-60 questline) or be there for Arya when she wants to strive to be as strong as Mira (Red Mage questline). Mira loves to learn about anything different than what she is used to. It's why she's usually with a book under her arm as well as her greatsword because it was the simple books in the school in Foundation that got her to love the written word. While her favorites are faerie tales and myths, if it's new and interesting, she will gravitate towards it and would want to try it at least once. You only have one life so why not fill your mind with as much as you can, right? Because Ishgard was so insular prior to Heavensward, anything that didn't involve Halone or fighting dragons was considered a treat for Mira and the need just grew. It's because of this need that led her out of Ishgard after the Calamity and became an adventurer: to see and learn new things. But despite all of this, she is definitely prone to being bored. Mira always needs to be occupied with something, whether it's reading or doing some sort of busywork that will challenge her. As mentioned in her backstory, while working for the same person her mother did, she did do her work but she was usually caught slacking or just bored out of her skull. She's someone who needs a challenge otherwise being bored will lead to things that will not bore her, usually in the dangerous sense. Like trying jumping puzzles in Kugane that are so small she would probably fall from making a wrong step or trying to get a Hunt mark too strong for her. She's also known to be a bit blunt at times, learned from her time with Fray. As much as she loves to help people, she would like to be appreciated and not taken advantaged of. While getting the goods from a merchant, they were angry that it did not come back in the best condition and demanded Mira pay him for the damages. Fray then wasn't happy as they started yelling about how they went out of their way to help and with minimal damage done and how the guy should be grateful that they actually helped out. In reality, no one could see Fray but Mira...and it was her unknowingly yelling at the merchant. She will teach people not to take advantage of her otherwise the results will not be so pretty; during a side quest in Shadowbringers, a young man took advantage of the kind nature of Mira and got her to do the dirty work of fighting monsters for some crystal needed because he was bored. When she found out and got the reward, there was a choice whether to give the well earned bottle of ale to the man...or smash the bottle in front of him. Yeah, Mira was petty enough to smash it in front of him. Overall, Mira is a book nerd who loves to learn new things and has compassion for her fellow man most of the time. Her ideals stem from what a dark knight should be (none of the edgy angsty bullshit, Sid) such as protecting the weak and courage to face any trial that comes her way through her adventures. But there are even limits to Mira's kindness and if someone decides to overstep them, she will show them why it's never a good idea. ABILITIESDark Knight- The vigilante types so to speak. Dark knights are basically tank classes who use a giant two handed sword and channels magic through it, mostly of the dark kind. Red Mage- Using both black and white mana, a red mage can cast both white and black magic at a rapid pace but uses a rapier and stone to channel their aether. Unlike black and white magic which has its own sources, red magic is more focused on the aether of the caster. Machinist- The power of *GUN*. Machinists use one handed guns as well as various types of machines such as a turret or even a large automaton called the Automaton Queen. Summoner- Summoners having bathed in the aether of primals (by fighting them) can summon smaller versions called 'egis' to fight alongside with them. They can also call upon Carbuncles (Emerald, Topaz, or Ruby) and are mostly offensive mages. Uses tomes as their weapon. Only one egi or carby can be out at a time. The Echo: A special ability that shows the user is one of the Mothercrystal's Blessed. It can translate any language known (but cannot speak it, just understand) as well as protects the user from tempering and mind control from enemies. With the Echo, she can be pulled into seeing the memories of someone's past. She cannot trigger it on her own and it happens at the weirdest times. The Echo also gives her a bit of a boost in endurance, being able to take a few more hits than the typical person. (Due to how crazy it can be, I am fine with this being nerfed or the Echo having extreme limits if needed.) Kojin's Blessing: Due to the Kojin's Blessing, Mira is able to breathe underwater as if she were on land. Skillswise, she does know some botany to understand plants for healing and poisons and some basic alchemy skills such as healing potions and antidotes for various status effects. It's enough for someone to be tided over while they run their butt to a doctor ASAP. Mira is a decent enough cook so her cooking isn't toxic to anyone. She's also great at bookbinding. EXTRA~Mira's sexual preference is Pansexual but she's kind of useless when it comes to other people noticing her. She can see it with others just fine but when it comes to her, someone has to either tell her or make a move that says they're interested. ~Her favorite flavor combination is Rolanberry and Lemon ~Her chocobo's name is Ramie and will peck anyone not his owner. She also owns two gaelicats named Breezy and Millie. Breezy is the younger (gaelikitten) while Millie is older (weatherproof gaelicat) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
